History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th. It is a global day that recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and also raises awareness about the challenges and issues that women continue to face worldwide.

The roots of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. The following year, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women’s Day, which was observed across the United States on February 28, 1909.

In 1910, the International Socialist Women’s Conference proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day at a meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. The proposal was unanimously accepted by the over 100 women from 17 countries in attendance. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than one million women and men attended rallies and demonstrations to demand women’s rights to vote, work, and hold public office.

In the years that followed, International Women’s Day became a platform for women’s rights and peace movements during World War I. In 1917, Russian women took to the streets on the last Sunday of February (according to the Julian calendar) demanding “bread and peace.” Four days later, the Tsar abdicated and the provisional government granted women the right to vote. The day of the protest, which became known as “Women’s Day,” was later recognized as February 23rd on the Gregorian calendar and is still celebrated as a public holiday in Russia today.

In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized International Women’s Day and declared March 8th as the official date for its celebration. Today, International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and is an occasion for women to come together to celebrate their achievements, raise awareness about the issues they face, and advocate for gender equality.
